Tips For Staying Safe When Using Propane Tanks

by Kelly Roberts

No matter what it is that you are using your propane tanks for, it is vital that you are remaining as safe as possible while doing so. To help you do that, you will want to take a few moments to review the following propane tank safety tips.

Check For Leaks

This is something that you will want to do as often as you can. If you rarely use the propane tank, you can simply check for leaks prior to turning it on. However, if you use it a lot, such as for cooking, then you will want to check it every week or so. To do this, you will simply need a small bucket of soapy water and a wash cloth. Get the wash cloth nice and wet with that soapy water and then wipe it across the rubber hose and connection pieces. Then, slowly turn the propane tank on. If there is a leak, you will notice little bubbles forming in the location of a break in the line. If you do not spot any bubbles, then you most likely do not have any leaks and can turn the tank back off while you clean off the soap residue with clean water.

Keep It Away From Grease

It is important to make sure that grease is never dripping on or right next to your propane tank. Therefore, if your grill's grease trap is missing or broken, you need to find a replacement. If the propane tank were to have a small leak that you have not yet noticed, and grease lands on it, a fire or explosion could take place.

Keep It Properly Stored

It is vital that you are properly storing your propane tank when it is not in use. Do not store it in your home or your garage. Instead, you will want to keep it outside in an area that is well ventilated. Just make sure that you are keeping it in a shaded area so that it is not in the path of direct sunlight. Also, you need to make sure that it is always kept in an upright position.

As you can see, staying safe when using propane tanks is easy enough. As long as you make sure that you, and everyone in your family, are following the previously mentioned propane tank safety tips, you should not have much to worry about.
